What We Learned: Orlando Pride falls 2-0 to Utah Royals

Heading into Saturday’s game against the Utah Royals, Orlando Pride coach Marc Skinner talked about the importance of containing players such as Christen Press and Amy Rodriguez.

Playing without Brazilian star Marta and with Alex Morgan not playing at 100%, it was those two Utah players Skinner alluded to earlier in the week that pounced on their opportunities Saturday night at Exploria Stadium.

Press struck first, then Rodriguez, lifting the Royals to a 2-0 victory over the Pride.

It was Orlando’s second consecutive shutout loss as it picked up its 11th loss of the season, sitting at the bottom of the NWSL standings with 11 points.

Skinner blasts officiating

Following last week’s ripping off the officiating from Ali Krieger during a 1-0 loss to the Houston Dash, Marc Skinner blasted the referees following Saturday’s 2-0 loss to the Royals.

Skinner was upset about a play in the 65th minute (pictured above) which showed Claire Emslie colliding with Utah goalkeeper Nichole Barnhart.

Head referee Malik Badawi, however, whistled a foul on Emslie instead of Barnhart, which Skinner argued it should have been a penalty for Orlando and a red card for the Royals goalkeeper.

“I think I sit here for the second week in a row and I’ll suggest that a refereeing decision has changed the complexity of the game,” said Skinner. “Having seen the picture of the challenge, not only is it a penalty, [but] it’s also last player, so it’s effectively a red card with which we’ve got given last week, which was rescinded by the way… so if that’s going to happen, I don’t know how you build to win a game of football.”

Skinner continued: “You gotta go into it and go ‘all right girls, today is about luck, if you got it, you win. If you don’t, you’re out’ and that for me, I’m sick of that, that’s not good enough. If I’m judged on my job, they should be judged on their job.”
