Orlando Pride drops season-finale game in loss to FC Kansas City

What seemed to be a good start for the Pride, soon turned into the usual back-to-back turnaround the team have witnessed in the last two games.

Playing in its regular season finale, the Orlando Pride fell 2-1 against visiting FC Kansas City on Saturday in front of an announced crowd of 7,454 at Camping World Stadium.

“At halftime in the first half in particular we controlled the game, dominated the game, we were in control of the game, we looked comfortable, had really good passages of soccer,” Pride head coach Tom Sermanni said. “The effort and commitment from the players has been outstanding in every game we’ve played. They’ve never thrown the towel in, they’ve never given up. If we can just turn these close defeats into some victories, then I think we can have a successful season next year.”

The Pride (6-13-1, 19 points) took an early lead in the 16th minute when Jasmyne Spencer smashed a volley into the net after the ball deflected off a Kristen Edmonds free kick.

But the lead was short lived when Tiffany McCarty tied the game in the 47th minute when she easily tapped in a rebound off Orlando goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris. FC Kansas City scored the go-ahead goal in the 84th minute after Shea Groom was fouled inside the box. Heather O’Reilly converted on the penalty for the 2-1 lead.

Women’s soccer veteran and Pride midfielder Becky Edwards played her last match after announcing her retirement from soccer earlier this week.

Sermanni mentioned there will be some roster changes in the coming days. The Pride end its first season in the NWSL on a eight game winless run with the last victory occurring on July 10 of this year.
